I am collecting donations to fund bicycles for girls in Guatemala. These bikes do more than just provide transportation. They provide better health (as some girls walk up to 10 miles to school and 10 miles back home each day, putting them at risk for extreme exhaustion), safety (walking such long distances by themselves puts them at risk for rape, kidnapping, and murder), and they also make education more accessible. Girls who bike to school are less fatigued and endangered from traveling long distances, and thus don't skip school because of these factors.
#62milliongirls worldwide are uneducated due to numerous causes such as poverty (in developing countries, many families don't have enough money to send their children to school, and if they have enough money to send one child to school, the boy is sent over the girl), gender discrimination (girls are expected to work at home or get married as a child rather than attend school), and violence in schools (including rape and sexual harassment).
Girls need to be educated. If all girls worldwide were sent to secondary school, there would be 66% fewer child marriages. For each year a girl is in school, she will earn 20% more pay as an adult.
But girls' education doesn't only benefit girls. 65 low - and middle - income countries are losing approximately $92 million each year by keeping girls out of school. When 10% more girls are sent to school, a county's GDP increases by 3%.
Help me get bikes to these girls. Girls need to be educated, and the world needs educated girls. For the price of one coffee a day, you can help these girls get the education they need to be able to change the world.
You can donate by going to my Change Heroes fundraiser page! (Note: for some reason, it doesn't work on Google Chrome. No idea why.)
Thank you all so much and happy holidays! (Or happy winter if you're not celebrating anything).
