I’m going to write this piece as if democracy didn’t exist and Hillary Clinton were guaranteed the presidency, because I just really think she’d make an amazing president. If you don’t know who I’m talking about, here is a quick synopsis: she’s Bill Clinton, but better. Also, if you don’t know who I’m talking about: have you been living under a rock?
Ms. Clinton was the First Lady of the United States from
1992-2000. In that “esteemed” position that I quite frankly
find ridiculous and slightly sexist (what if the president were gay or a woman married to a man?), she fought tirelessly to reform our healthcare system so that all people, regardless of their background or current social standing, could have access to affordable care. While still not being the president (unfortunately), she created the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which provided health coverage to over 8 million children in the US. Also, as First Lady, she decided to be a total badass and go against official advice to the UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995 and. She then proceeded to give an incredible (and extremely quotable) speech, in which she declared: “human rights are women's rights and women's rights are human rights once and for all.” I have that on a t-shirt, and, personally, I think everyone should.
When her stint as the First Lady was up in 2000, she promptly became a US Senator; the first woman senator from New York, might I add. In this position, she convinced the Bush administration to use 20 billion dollars to rebuild New York in the aftermaths of 9/11, and also provided healthcare for first responders at Ground Zero.
She ran for president in 2008 against Barack Obama, our current president, if that was not already obvious. Though she lost (we still got an amazing president though! #GObama), she served as the Secretary of State for his presidency, and continued to fight for the rights of the underprivileged, here and abroad.
Why do I think Hillary Clinton will be president? First of all, she isn’t afraid to fight hard for what she thinks is right and against what she thinks is wrong. Second of all, she works tirelessly to ensure that all Americans have equal access to health coverage so they are all healthy, happy, and safe. Third of all, she is an avid women’s rights activist and advocate: something our world desperately needs.
She, along with her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, founded an organization called the No Ceilings Foundation, which focuses on attaining gender equality around the world. I was lucky enough to attend two conferences held by this organization (I was there when Chelsea announced her baby girl, Charlotte!) I also attended the conference that announced the Full Participation Plan. This plan outlined the ways that her organization would tirelessly fight for equality for all, everywhere. Oh, and let’s not forget that she’d be the first woman president of the United States EVER. E.V.E.R.
When Hillary is elected as president of the United States, she will make some serious changes to the way things are run ‘round here. All Americans will have affordable, safe healthcare. She will work towards all humans being treated equally, something that seems so simple, yet takes so much effort and work.
So, together, let’s break those glass ceilings and get Clinton elected!
